Welcome to Sea Side Weyr!
Thread was approaching rapidly. This was undeniable.
The strange events started when Nirav, a younger man born and raised as a fisher’s son in a small Hold, was Searched and automatically placed into the “greenrider” category by other candidates and riders alike. Nirav wanted a green with all his heart—he just knew he couldn’t be left standing…
And he wasn’t left standing. In fact, in the reeling and unimaginable ecstasy Impression to a lovely female, he barely noticed the gasps and outbursts from the other candidates and riders. He felt the hatchling’s distress at the crowd before his own, and whirled around, staring at shocked and angry faces, and he yelled back, pleading them to stop—until he finally noticed that the hatchling butting her head into his stomach to avoid the angry bronzes had a glimmer to her hide….
Golden Rishanath grew strong and healthy, undeniably a Weyrwoman-worthy dragon despite her less-than-feminine rider—but no one would dare admit that. Scorned and made into an outcast despite his high ranking position as a goldrider, the “weyrwoman” as others called him knew that this couldn’t last. But, despite the trials of living in such inhuman conditions, N’rav was trapped. Aside from the Weyrwoman herself (who all but refused to train the young man), N’rav was not only a goldrider but the only goldrider.
Four hard, near-unbearable Turns past before another golden egg graced the sands. It seemed all of Pern held its breath along with N’rav—if the little gold Impressed…
And Impress she did, to a young girl. N’rav was free.
If only things could be so easy.
It took N’rav so long to get together a large enough party of riders to go with him to form his own Weyr, but even then the problems persisted; he was considered way too young to be a Weyrleader at age 23, he needed Crafts, he needed Holders, and most of all, he needed a Weyr itself. It took the better part of a full Turn to get together, but N’rav found life back at his roots—near his fishing Hold, no longer so small, there was a range of cliffs and mountains along the sea—and with so many Holds surrounding the area, and so many of them fishers that Pern relied on for food….
Sea Side Weyr soon came into existence, named for the Hold that had accepted Nirav so long ago. But life was never so kind, especially not to the goldrider. Soon after the creation of the Weyr, but before anyone actually moved officially from their own Weyrs, Rishanath rose in flight. After possibly the most important event in Sea Side’s history came to pass, the largest of the Weyr’s few bronzes flew Rishanath in a long, tense mating flight. Elitarith successfully brought D’nal, formerly not interested in the Sea Side project at all, the position as Weyrleader alongside N’rav. He accepted shortly after the flight, and became the first Weyrleader in Sea Side's brief history.
So now, Seaside Weyr sits, ostracized by the Pernese and considered the lowest Weyr, a disgrace to the dragon riders. Yet, through it all, riders do transfer here- riders who Impress unexpectedly, or have “unnatural” attractions and needs, or just simply long for a life with just a little less prejudice and hatred. It’s just as common to refer to female weyrmates as to males or even male-female couples, and the controversial “Double Weyrleadership” is far from a secret.
Rishanath’s clutch hardens on the Hatching Sands. Candidates are desperately being Searched, the riders fearing refusal and hoping for an open-minded father or mother to allow their sons and daughters chances at Sea Side Weyr. Even young weyrlings, once reserved for future Impressions of their own Weyr, are asked all but pleadingly to join the Hatching.
Every day, N’rav and D’nal watch over their Weyr, and every day the nervous question arises--will there be enough candidates for Rishanath’s clutch?
Will you join the ranks of riders, watching with baited breath as the Red Star looms ominously just above the horizon?
Sea Side is a semi-canon Weyr based on the original Dragonriders of Pern trilogy and the Harper Hall trilogy. Eight colours, some high-ranked positions open, and a clutch hardening on the Sands. Do you have what it takes?
Here's a very important note--This Weyr in itself is designed to be a place with full tolerance for the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) community. Gay men are an important part of the series, though Anne is courteous enough not to say so outright. This needs to be a safe environment; everyone keep it cool. If you can't take that without offense, I'm sorry, and you can stop wasting your time here right now.
I'm glad you've joined me! Now, please take the time to read the rest of my rules, etc, and we'll go on from there.
